Pot-Hole At Air Panas Junction

If you are passing by the Air Panas market's traffic lights junction, keep a look out for this pot hole. It is located right in the middle of the road and someone has planted a piece of stick on it to alert others. If you are driving or riding a bike, look out so that you do not crash into it. The hole is about two feet across and can give you a nasty fall.

A Tilapia By Any Other Name!

Ladies, don't be amazed if you find someone calling a local fish Emerald Fish. It is only a black tilapia. The Cantonese call it Kam Foong. Fish markets are abound with this fish to feed the frenzy local fish lovers have created. It is nothing more than a black tilapia. No worries. Anbd you should not pay a bomb over it.

Great Fishballs, Where?

Ladies, if you are into cooking and want to get some very nice fishball, check out the stall inside Genting Kelang Wet Market. This lady sells a wide variety of fishballs and stuff you need for making steamboat meals or young tau foo. Prices are reasonable. Her stall is located in the centre rows, opposite some green grocers.

Rice of All Types at Genting Kelang Market

If you are looking for organic rice, or brown rice, you can get them quite easily at Genting Kelang wet market. There is one chap who sells it at the wet market near some vegetable sellers. We wished we could take a good shot of him but apparently he is from the old school - despite reassurances to help himpromote his business, he didn't take it quite easily. In any case, here are some photos - excuse the quality, though.

Candy Man

They call him Tok-Tok Man or the ancient candy seller. This fellow is hardly 40 and he is plying a dying trade in candy. He can be seen at Genting Kelang market on Saturday mornings. A packet of peppermint candy costs RM4.

Tun Ghafar Baba Laid Foundation Stone To Air Panas Market

You may not be aware of it, but the late Tun Ghafar baba laid the foundation stone to the Air Panas Wet Market on Jan 14, 1996. You can see this plaque at the entrance to the pasar.

Who Knows Where Gombak Wet Market is?

White elephant.

If you pass by Jalan Gombak, you will see this structure. It houses the Gombak Wet Market. It was built in the 80s so that the morning market traders would be trading from a proper place. It was City Hall's plan to move all morning market traders operating from the roadsides into a better place.

However, the plan backfired. Few traders wanted to move in. Word has it that their reluctance was due to the fact that pork was not allowed to be sold here. Today, this modern market houses a City Hall materinity clinic, a Bank, and a miss-mash of various market traders with still plenty of stalls not taken up.

There is an escalator to the upper floor but it is only switched on on certain days. You get a handful of traders selling from meat to vegetables and the lobby area is used by traders selling tidbits. It's a real shame. If not for the bank operating here, the building would be empty.

No Time For Prying Eyes, I am Hungry!

This man was spotted loitering around Genting Kelang Market amid the hawker stalls, going table from table after the diners have left. He checks out the leftovers and when something strikes his fancy, he grabs the leftovers and eat it (inset picture), without worry or care of prying eyes. From the looks, he appeared to be Chinese, about 70. When the stomach is hungry, sometimes we have to let go of pride and other concerns and fill the stomach first. To many, he could be an eccentric. Sadly, one wonders where his family is.

You Don't Have To Go To China For Jades

You heard right - you don't have to go to China to buy jades or any Chinese stuff. Just visit the Genting Kelang market and chances are you might come across this chap at the entrance, trading his ware on the tarred road. Feng shui stuff, ornaments and almost anything. He looks local and sounds local, and could be a local.

Genting Kelang Market

Genting Kelang was once known as Peng Chong or biscuit factory in Cantonese. The market used to be located by the roadside under the current pedestrian bridge. However, because of the jams created each morning, the hawkers and traders were relocated to a better place opposite the old side, just within walking distance from the multi-storeys that are Pelangi Court (the one facing the main road) and Genting Court.

Apart from vegetables, fish and meat, you can also find clothings and household utensils here. The pork selling area is at one corner with a sign that says Tempat Menjual Daging Khinzir. You will see a small red shrine near this area.

Air Panas Market

The Air Panas or Hot Springs market is a hive of activity from 6am daily. This wet market is a favourite of those who stayed in the vicinity. Things are relatively cheap and within the heart of this building are foodstalls, surrounded by the vegetable and meat stalls.

There is also an in-house pork selling area but since this is haram to Islam, the pork sellers are relegated an area at the end of the market.

You can find mutton and some beef here, too. the vegetable section are located beside the main road. Parking is across the street and free. On weekends, opposite thr road from the market's entrance is a collection point for recyclables.
