Where is DeliFrance?

Shoe City now occupies the spot where DeliFrance used to be.
The first DeliFrance outlet in Wangsa Maju started at the Alpha Angle many years ago. It had enjoyed good business allowing diners to have a snack and rest their feet when shopping at the complex. The outlet sits on the second floor, overlooking the concourse below where sales are held or when festive promos are the order of the day. Imagine our surprise when we visited it recently to grab a croissant - instead we were greeted by a new outlet in its place - Shoe City. Talk about having shoe in your mouth! Anybody knew where DeliFrance went?

Wangsa Walk Charges For Parking

Folks, free meals are over! Wangsa Walk now charges for parking, going by the hour. The only place that does not charge for parking is Carrefour. When Wangsa Walk opened several months back, parking was free. So, people living along the area can expect some people to park by the roadside and walking to Wangsa Walk to escape from paying the fee.

Prawn Fishing In Genting Kelang

This blogger was told that the operators of CenterMart at Genting Kelang are looking for ways to attract shoppers to the multiconcept shopping mall and one of the ways, including hosting a fun-fair, is to have prawn fishing in its grounds (see picture). The announcement has been made in the form of banners too. So, intrepid anglers, you might want to quench your thirst in this recreational past time activity which was popular in the 90s.

Wadey Seller In Carrefour?

I dont believe it - see this wadey seller? He is a staff of Carrefour plying this business in the shopping complex. Carrefour has become quite innovative in its approach to business. there are now wooden benches in the main aisle for shoppers to sit. I think this is also quite innovative. The manager must be commended, of course. Now, with a playground, a towfoofaa man, maybe even some goreng pisang makcik, the kampung scene will be completed. You know what they say about being able to take someone out of the kampung and not the kampung out of them?

I think rather than waste money on these frivolities, Carrefour would do well cutting its prices than shops in its vicinity. Already I can find one outlet selling stuff cheaper than it. Oh, please check on your flyer distributor, ok? My mailbox has just been cluttered by at least a dozen of the same promotional flyer. So have my neighbours. Why chuck garbage into our mailboxes when only one will do? Trying to give describe junk mail better izzit?

Mind Your Steps At Centermart

Mind these!

If you are visiting Centremart in Genting Kelang, don't be too excited over your shopping or what you might find there cheap. Be careful and look where youu are going.

Apparently the owners did not pay good attention to safety where the building joints the other end. Look at the picture and you will get my drift. These steps are not so well indicated under the dimly-lit interior and if your kids are running around, they might find themselve tmbling all over if they miss this step. Older people, too, should be careful.

Tell your friends, will you?

Smelly Towfoo At Sri Rampai Pasar Malam

If you visit the Taman Seri Rampai night market on Thursdays and smell a rat - or rather, smell shit - be comforted to know that you have not stepped on human excrement nor are near a sewage pond.

You are in the vicinity of a Chow Tow Foo or Smelly Tow Foo vendor. I wont tell you where this fella is located, so you will have to sniff him down. For clues, I have provided his pictures. And if you can stand the smell, maybe you would also like to stomach the fermented beancurd fried. And if he asks where you learnt about him, tell him you read him here first.

Good Greens Grocer

If you go to Genting Kelang Market, there is one stall by the side which itemises the prices of its greens and other stuff. I thought it was kind of thoughtful of the green grocer and his/her dilgence should be widely emulated. While everywhere prices are displayed, small wet markets are still getting away with not displaying price tags of any kind. As a result, consumers like you and I are disadvantaged, not knowing if we are being cheated or not.

You Don't Have To Go To China For Jades

You heard right - you don't have to go to China to buy jades or any Chinese stuff. Just visit the Genting Kelang market and chances are you might come across this chap at the entrance, trading his ware on the tarred road. Feng shui stuff, ornaments and almost anything. He looks local and sounds local, and could be a local.

Are These Fruits Eatable?

I was at a local supermarket recently when I stumbled upon this bag of goodies in a basket - fruits of various kinds lumped and sold by the bag.

Some of the fruits did not look so fresh and tempting, but the prices were too good not to take a second glance.

Are they fit for human consumption or are they for feeding pets? Would appreciate if someone tell me.

The quality is nothing to shout about but still they are usable. But if you are fussy, then you can save up for other sales which should be coming soon.

Where Is The Best Siew Yoke Stall In Wangsa Maju?

If you like barbecued pork as much as some people, try the pork selling section behind the Jalan Genting Kelang market. There are a couple of stalls selling pork here and two are selling barbecued pork - char siew as well as siew yoke.

What boggles the mind is that why both selling cooked food are allowed to sell their stuff beside the raw pork sellers. Isn't this unhygienic?

If you like barbecued pork, if you purchase them here, I hope you will cook them again before eating. Else you might risk a stomach upset if they are contaminated by flies.

New Shopping Mall In Wangsa Maju - Centremart@Setapak!

Centremart@Setapak - will it last?

We just checked out the Centermart@Setapak, a new concept in warehouse shopping set up in the middle of January 2009 across what is known as Danau Kota - across the road from Platinum Point - along Jalan Genting Kelang.

In a nutshell, it is a Makro-like kind of shopping here except that this one has many shops under one roof, with several restaurants, a car dealer, a children's playground, sundry store as anchor, several wet market stalls, and some cubicles for trading ala trade expo.

The sundry store, Pasaraya Shuang Lim (above), looks promising with prices pretty cheap. Rice and some household items are pretty cheap compared to the nearer Jaya Jusco. Even the bags of brown rice was cheaper than Carrefour when we last checked. Ecobrown brown rice went for RM19plus for a 5kg bag against Carrefour's RM20plus. Garlic went for RM5.50 for 7kg bags. And there were too many.

Other things are the same price and if you are looking for beer, forget it. The price is just about the same even if you purchase in dozens.

Carrefour Convenience Store

Step aside 7-Eleven. Meet Carrefour's convenience store. This one is located at Section Two, Wangsa Maju, at the new block of shops just before you make the turn into Desa Setapak.

The range is quite good though ranging from household products to sundry goods. Inside, you can't help feeling that it's a miniature of the giant hypermarket. In any case, for residents of Wangsa Maju, when the big Carrefour closes, you know where to head for when you need your household supplies.

Sri Gombak Market - Clean and Nice

Well organised, plenty of parking. The Sri Gombak Market.

If you had been to the markets in Wangsa Maju, ie. Air Panas and Genting Kelang wet markets, and Gombak Market, you will find that they are quite dirty. Of course, if you dont mind - and you shouldnt, markets being markets and dirty afterall - it is one of those things we learn to live with.
Clean or not? Just look at the floor - not wet and grimy. Now, this is one market I want to see in Wangsa Maju area!

But if you want to see a really clean market, check out the Sri Gombak Market located in Taman Sri Gombak, near Batu Caves. This market, operated by both Chinese and Malays, is a model market City Hall should emulate for all markets.
Not only are the prices reasonable and tagged, the place is pretty clean too. Even the arrangements are neat and nice and marketing is a whole new experience too.

This is one of the most popular green grocers here. See the video-cam on the ceiling? I was told that the stall can get so busy that thieves often make off with their vege. Hence the third eye from above!

Baker's Cottage - Desa Setapak

This is one outlet you should visit if you love bread. In fact, it is one of the branches of the Baker's Cottage chain of bakery. What I like about it is the 99sen deals you find at certain times of the day.

The proprietor must have been a smart fella with good business acumen. After certain hours, you know for sure certain things can sell and certain things cannot, and will probably end up in the next morning's trash can if you insist on the price tag. But if you were to go cheap, even marginally, at the end of the day, not only will you garner goodwill from those who can ill afford your tagged price but earn their gratitude as well, especially during tough times when everyone is looking to stretch the ringgit.

This cheap-cheap concept is neither new nor novel - it has been practiced by some socially responsible corporate bodies already. It's about giving back to society when you reap from them.

Where Are The Fair Price Shops In Wangsa Maju?

Dear All

I am trying to compile a list of Fair Price shops in Wangsa Maju and I desperately need your help. This is because since the last price increase of petrol/diesel, most things have gone up by at least 30 to 40 per cent, including daily needs such as food.

Today, the price of fuel has dropped below USD72 per barrel, which undoubtedly will reduce further the pump price of petrol. Now it is already as RM2.30 (a drop of 40 sen from the RM2.70 which constitutes to a 15 % drop). While some shops are reducing, others still maintain the pre-RM2.70 petrol price kind of pricing. Others, a few unscrupulous ones, have even upped it discreetly in anticipation of the bad economy ahead next year.

As a resident in the Wangsa Maju constituency, I hope this website to be of service in critical times like these. But I need your assistance too, especially students of TAR College (and UTAR) living around here.

Tell me where the cheap/fair price makan shops, food stalls, grocery outlets, photostat shops, and other services you come in daily contact with. You are the best judge as you compare notes with your colleagues and if you can find some time to help me compile a list of fair price shops, I will list them all here for the benefit of everyone.

We live in one big village called Wangsa Maju and let's help each other to tide over hard times like these. Post your recommended shop below and if you can, say why. Shopkeepers in Wangsa Maju are also welcomed to feed this post. Our readers will judge whether you are fair priced or not if you are listed.

Income Tax Department in Wangsa Maju

If you are wondering where Menara Hidayah* (formerly Menara Kausar) is in Wangsa Maju, where you are supposed to go settle your taxes, then here is the picture. It is located right opposite the Alpha Angle.

The nearest public transport hub is the Wangsa Maju LRT station.

Get down there, walk across the road via the pedestrian bridge and get down the other side, and head towards Alpha Angle.

The building is at your right if you are facing Alpha Angle from the LRT station.

*Thanks to Eddie Wong for update!
