Moga Punjab, if you love Punjabi food

Moga Punjab opened in June, 2011

Delicious potato prata (aloo pratha) served with mint sauce and mung bean dhall curry.
Looking for authentic Punjabi food? Check out the Moga Punjab Punjabi eatery which has just opened at Platinum Walk area, behind the Columbia Hospital, adjacent to the Ayamas outlet. It serves a variety of Punjabi bread (pratha) with fillings such as potatoes and cauliflower. Since the restaurant is new, the owners said that they are still trying to organise stuff. We will be going there again for a better write-up. If you have been there, post your comments below, ya?

The Platinum Walk area will probably has the highest concentration per sq km of massage parlours. There are at least three within a shout's distance. These health centres have been here since Platinum Walk started. Below are three of those in and around Platinum Walk:

MYMydin Now Open

The spices corner is well stocked and possibly better than that of Carrefour, even.

There is one more outlet for shopping convenience for those staying in Danau Kota, Setapak Garden and Taman Ibu Kota. MyMydin has opened an outlet near the Platinum block of condos and from the look of the crowd, it is quite popular.

Although range of goods is somewhat limited, this outlet has a good stock of spices. The greens are also quite cheap. The only problem is the lack of parking and one dreads to think of what will happen should there be a sale.

Rest of the stuff are so-so only

One more option for shoppers in Danau Kota area

Best Terengganu Nasi Dagang Is Available Here

Difference between nasi dagang Terengganu and Kelantan's is that the rice is white. And Terengganu nasi dagang tastes a whole lot better!
IF you crave for a good nasi dagang, Terengganu nasi dagang, that is, head to Platinum Walk at Danau Kota. A newly open restaurant by the name of D'Ganu Station could just be the place you should head to.

Its owners, from Kemaman, opened shop barely a month ago when we passed by the place and decided to give it a try. I am pleased to report that the RM4 for a plate of nasi dagang Terengganu is definitely worth it. You get two chunks of boneless tuna (ikan aya, in Malay) and you can enjoy the rice which is one of the best of Terengganu I have tasted so far.

Of course, don't just stop at that - there are many more Terengganu delicacies that you should try, such as the pengat pisang (banana broth), keropok lekor (fish sausages) and the likes.

You get two chunks of tuna in a very delicious curry. Hot, too!

The restaurant is located in the middle row of Platinum Walk, beside the Fatty Prawn fishing outlet. D'Ganu opens from 8am. If you still can't find the way, call the number on the menu card, featured below.

How Stupid Can This Father Be?

It's not easy to have kids and when you do, you take care of them - not put their lives in danger like this guy, and the guy behind him who was spotted at Danau Kota. Not only are their kids not wearing helmets, the chap in front seems to enjoy himself and his father, well, he just couldn't care less. Wonder if the mother knows about this?

Handphone Sale At Platinum Walk

It may be over by the time you read this. If it is not, then good luck. It will be on till Sunday, Mar 8. Things are cheap but mind your pockets - especially of pickpockets.

Bandaraya Truck Breaking The Law

If you are wondering why some people break the law so easily, you can stop doing so now. Just look at this picture - that's a bandaraya truck you are looking at. It is parked at the Danau Kota Midnight Bazaar site opposite Ganda Dua restaurant.

Look now at the wheels. There is a yellow line and you think it should park there? No wonder other motorists are following suit.

New Shopping Mall In Wangsa Maju - Centremart@Setapak!

Centremart@Setapak - will it last?

We just checked out the Centermart@Setapak, a new concept in warehouse shopping set up in the middle of January 2009 across what is known as Danau Kota - across the road from Platinum Point - along Jalan Genting Kelang.

In a nutshell, it is a Makro-like kind of shopping here except that this one has many shops under one roof, with several restaurants, a car dealer, a children's playground, sundry store as anchor, several wet market stalls, and some cubicles for trading ala trade expo.

The sundry store, Pasaraya Shuang Lim (above), looks promising with prices pretty cheap. Rice and some household items are pretty cheap compared to the nearer Jaya Jusco. Even the bags of brown rice was cheaper than Carrefour when we last checked. Ecobrown brown rice went for RM19plus for a 5kg bag against Carrefour's RM20plus. Garlic went for RM5.50 for 7kg bags. And there were too many.

Other things are the same price and if you are looking for beer, forget it. The price is just about the same even if you purchase in dozens.

Have You Been To Island Red Cafe?

NEW KID ON THE BLOCK - Island Red Cafe
New kid on the block, Island Red Cafe (www.irc2u.com) at Platinum Walk is giving Old Town White Coffee a run for its money.

In fact, several Saturdays ago, we noted that the the former was crowded while the latter was sparely full.

We wondered why so we decided to check it out. And now we know why.

Food was pretty cheap and service extremely fast. All our orders were served under 10 minutes. I like the red concept, too, like Man U's theme, it's just appropriate.

The food business operators around the area had better take heed. If IRC continues to give good service, you guys had better start looking elsewhere for customers.

The only thing I don't quite like is the service charge - are they allowed to do so?

Pineapple-Lemon juice ala IRC.-RM3.60

IRC Toast. - RM1.00

Rojak at IRC. - RM4.50

Carrefour Convenience Store

Step aside 7-Eleven. Meet Carrefour's convenience store. This one is located at Section Two, Wangsa Maju, at the new block of shops just before you make the turn into Desa Setapak.

The range is quite good though ranging from household products to sundry goods. Inside, you can't help feeling that it's a miniature of the giant hypermarket. In any case, for residents of Wangsa Maju, when the big Carrefour closes, you know where to head for when you need your household supplies.

Cheap Food - Taman Teratai Mewah

See this restaurant? No it is not a Japanese seafood or sushi joint. Very much Chinese in fact.
It is highly popular in the evenings on weekends when people eat out. Why it is popular is obvious - food is good and portions are big. Check out their Hokkien Mee and fried rice. You will agree that the extra pork-fat fritters make for good taste!
The restaurant is located along the Gamblers' Row - near the SportsToto, Magnum and Damacai outlets in Teratai Mewah, in Setapak Garden.

Kayu Danau Kota Ka-Yoed - Snooker Centre Takes Over

This used to be the premises of the Kayu Restaurant - you know, the famous Penang-mali Kayu chain?

Did you know that the Kayu Danau Kota restaurant, which operated barely two years, have been KO-ed? Why it has happened no one knows. High costs and poor business(??) could be the reason. Who knows?

In its place is a giant snooker centre. And a tyre shop below. The picture above was taken when renovations were being done. The picture below is what it is now - not opened yet though.

Just wondering out loud - the teachers of Danau Kota schools opposite the road should tighten their surveillance for truants who are now within smelling distance of not only cybercafes but also a brand-new snooker centre. If they don't, exam results will take a dive - together with the school's reputation, which will no doubt stink as much as the oxidation pond not too far away...

Platinum Walk - Another Happening Lepak Place?

This is currently the most developed area in Danau Kota. It is simply known as Platinum Walk, located on your left as you turn in from Jalan Genting Kelang.

You should not miss it if you are travelling by during the day. The bright ugly yellow facade is eye-catching enough, although certainly not a sight for sore eyes.

Several blocks consisting of three-storey shops have been opened amid cobblestoned walks. The shops are still empty but a modern Kopitiam has opened at one end. Others will follow suit, no doubt.

Pray that the mamak restaurants have not joined the race for place. Otherwise, you will have tables occupying parking lots in the evenings and Sunday mornings that you will be forced to park along the main roads.

Hope the developer will be wise not to let this happen as it did in Wangsa Maju Section 2 - of which most of the culprits are the hawker centres and a few mamak restaurants...

Bet You Know Very Little About Danau Kota

Back in the 70s, the piece of land you now recognised as Danau Kota is but a vast expanse of disused mining land. There is a huge lake where tomans and terubuk (a species of carp) live amidst the hyacinths bordering the lake.

Where the Langkawi Apartments (picture above) now sit, near the Indian temple, is a cow-shed. The animals could be seen being herded into their corral by an Indian cowherd and in the mornings, they could be seen sending fresh milk on both bicycle and motorcycle.

Further out, near Jalan Genting Kelang, where the golf firing range is, if I recall correctly, is a old house handling a cottage industry of some kind, soya sauce factory perhaps. The access from this end is a small footpath created by anglers and lakeside residents.

Teratai Mewah apartments came in much later in the 80s.

The only access into the lake side from Jalan Genting Kelang is the road where the developer office is now located. On a bike, you could take a shortcut from Genting Kelang and out to Setapak Garden through some tricky laterite paths.

Now, the lake, which is now shrunken to half its size, was a sight to behold in the mornings and evenings. The watere was crystal clear and a few houses were located amid the lush greenery circling the lake. These were owned by Malay families, accessible through tiny footpaths on the adventurous know.

Several times a year, the terubuk population would explode and the fish would make their way to a small stream that runs on the western side of the lake, after being chased by hungry tomans during the annual feast. The twice annual mating season of the terubuk meant free meals for the tomans and lakeside villagers as they congregate at the stream's neck by the lake to catch fish with their bare hands while the tomans stood guard in the deeper end.

If memory serves me right, Taman Ibu Kota and Setapak Garden were the only developed housing estates at the time, until the 80s, when Langkawi flats became the tallest buildings there. Of course, it was outdone by the current multi-storey flats in the late 90s and early 2000s.

Long time Langkawi flats owners would remember the trembling caused by the earth trucks moving to fill up the lake where the new neighbouring flats are built.

Many had a first hand experiences of mini-earthquake tremors wondered if the land on which the high rises flats were being built was actually save and would not sink. For in the 70s and 80s, no one would want to buy a mining land property for obvious fear of the house or building toppling over, or even sinking.

But I guess all these have been forgotten. In the name of development, Danau Kota lost a beautiful lake and a wonderful ecosystem. The concrete jungle is slowly replacing Danau Kota's original secondary forests. That's the price we pay for development.

Midnight Pasar Malam in Danau Kota

If you are new to Wangsa Maju and have decided to stay around Gombak, Wangsa Maju or Genting Kelang, and are mostly a nocturnal creature with a penchant for shopping, you might like to know that there is a place for you to frequent.

Known as Bazar Larut Malam, or Midnight Bazaar, this special pasar malam starts from 9pm to 3am, nightly except Thursdays - at least it used to, until recently when every day is bazaar day.

The bazaar takes up the entire stretches of roads around the Shell and Petronas stations and about some of the shophouses' lanes near the the main hawker complex in Danau Kota.

The traders here are all Malays selling a variety of goods, such as bags, attire, shoes, car spareparts, and even on rare occasions, Protons. Yes, the car.

Prices are so-so and you can bargain. Goods mostly come from Indonesia, Thailand or China.

Watch Out When Beating Lights At Danau Kota-Genting Kelang

If you have this insatiable tendency to beat traffic lights, watch out when you are along Danau Kota-Genting Kelang, near the JPJ. There is an overhead camera can can set you RM300 poorer and I bet you it works.
