Help! The Setapak Garden Pasar Malam is Missing!

We have just been alerted to this. The Wednesday pasar malam at Setapak Garden has gone missing. Last Wednesday, it was said that City Hall came and issued notices that there will be no more pasar malam at Setapak Garden.

The decision to ban the pasar malam started last year when a new thoroughfare was built from Setapak Garden (Teratai Mewah apartments) to the mosque at the 4-3/4 Mile Jalan Gombak or better known as Sungai Mulia. Now that the road is about to be fully opened, ie. joined to Jalan Gombak, City Hall banned the pasar malam, we were told. Because of this, the almost two decade-old night market where residents nearby could purchase cheap veges and other stuff, was removed. Where the new location would be is yet to be known - at least at this moment of writing.

Will a solution be found for the poor traders? Where can the people staying in Setapak Garden and thereabouts purchase cheap goods?

Our suggestion is to use the ring road where the Danau Kota's Bazar Larut malam (see previous post) is located.

Right now, the bazaar operates six days a week, minus Thursday where a pasar malam operates.

How about allowing the Setapak Garden pasar malam to operate there on Wednesdays and the Larut Malam bazaar traders take a break? This is definitely most suitable for the almost mile long Setapak Garden pasar malam. Besides, this area in Danau Kota near the petrol stations is a commercial area which will be almost deserted by nightfall. Certainly the Bazar Larut Malam traders can share the spot with pasar malam traders!

The Setapak Garden Pasar Malam started way back circa 1978. Remembered pretty well as I was then in primary school and looked forward to Wednesdays.

Actually, it was slated to be closed about a year ago but due to appeals it was extended indefinitely. And somebody took credit and got political mileage for helping the traders with the appeal. No prize for guessing who he was!

These days, most people do not favour Pasar Malam to be held in front of their houses for obvious reasons.

Apparently, the Pasar Malam will be shifted to the road that runs between the Idaman Sutera Condo and the Idaman Suria Apt. The other day, I saw a few DBKL staff and the Pengerusi Penjaja-Penjaja Pasar Malam Taman Setapak checking out and taking some measurements, pics of the road. This Pengerusi is a close buddy of Yew TL, saw him countless times at Yew’s office, apart from sharing some spotlight with Yew judging from the pics in the booklet that he (Yew) sent out before the GE.

Once the site is approved as the new Pasar Malam, you can be sure that it will be reported in the Press that ‘someone’ has worked tirelessly and fought for the traders – hoping that it’s good exposure for him to regain the Wangsa Maju seat in the next GE!!

My dad who lives in Tmn Ibu Kota said there were FRU men at the pasar malam spot on Wed night. Huh! All the show of might to ensure no trader opens stall.

As for the suggestion to share space with the Bazaar folks, hmm....I don't think those Bazaar traders would want that. Just my hunch...

I just stumbled upon this blog and I think congratulations are in order for this excellent blog! I am a resident of Setapak Garden and have been a regular shopper at my beloved pasar malam for 9 years until it was taken away with nary an explanation! I miss this hallmark of Malaysian shopping for many reasons...
I buy my onions, garlic, potato's at a stall that is owned by a Malay man whose name I don't know and I call him 'Boss". The moment I arrive, he tells me "How many kilos of this one? This one? This one indicating the onions etc.....I am not allowed to choose anything as he says that he will get the best ones for me..."kat belakang"! How is that for service? The other shoppers do nothing but look at me in awe. If I cannot make it to pasar malam that week, my husband goes and he gets the same treatment. Boss will ask....madam busy ah? and ask..."This one how many kilo's?

My veggie lady, grows her own veggies and has a tiny stall which is terselit in between stalls. The best part is her veggies are pesticide free! And cheap!

I could go on and on.....but the bottom line is.....I WANT MY PASAR MALAM BAAAACK! What can I do as a concerned citizen to make this happen?

Hey Guys,
The only reason this was closed down was because your guys elected PKR and PAS in the last election instead of BN. So the BN govt thru Dewan Bandaraya decided to punish you. Now since the pasar malam is no more around...please maintain your vote...with PKR and PAS..I visited this pasar malam for years to get my provisions and some other interesting food...even had relatives who come and visit us yearly from overseas...one of the eager things they plan on their trip is to visit this pasar malam in setapak garden...so do not forget...since they have punished us...maintain your vote...for alternative there is a 100% bumi pasarmalam in Danau Kota...but is a farcry from the one in setapak garden...it was a real "1 Malaysia Pasar Malam"

From what we understood, the road where the Setapak Garden pasar malam was held was turned into a thoroughfare linking Jalan Gombak to Jalan Langkawi. It was moved not as a punishment for any voting reasons but due to complaints by residents living smack on the pasar malam stretch. This was communicated to us by some of the residents living there, and inconsiderate hawkers and shoppers often blocked the entrances to their home. Anyone who lived there would dread wednesdays when the pasar malam was held. This to to set the record straight.
